Zeolites Other than Erionite

چکیده

Natural zeolites occur in over 40 countries and are mined in 11 of these at a rate of around 250 thousand tonnes per year. Discovery of the characteristic ion-exchange, dehydration and selective-adsorption properties of these zeolites, which are related to their unique honeycomb structure, stimulated the development of severa1 processes for the manufacture of synthetic zeolites. These synthetic zeolites share and improve upon these properties of natural zeolites. So far, nearly 100 structural types of synthetic and natural zeolites have been reported (Meier et aL., 1996; Roland & Kleinschmit, 1996); within these types, a large number of chemically diverse synthetic zeolites and 40 natural zeolites are now known (Roskil Information Services Ltd, 1988). Among the natural zeolites, erionite was previously evaluated as a human carcinogen (IARC, 1987) and is not included in this monograph.

GENERAL REMARKS ON THE SUBSTANCES eONSIDERED

This sixty-eighth volume of IARC Monographs considers certain forms of crystalIine and amorphous silica, some silicates (palygorskite, also called attapulgite; sepiolite; wollastonite; and some natura1 and synthetic zeolites, exc1uding erionite), coa1 dust and para-aramid fibrils. Some of these agents are fibrous in nature (palygorskite, sepiolite, wollastonite and sorne natural zeolites, as we...

The effect of iron on the biological activities of erionite and mordenite.

Epidemiological data has demonstrated that environmental and/or occupational exposure to mineral particulates may result in the development of pulmonary fibrosis, bronchogenic carcinoma and malignant mesothelioma many years following exposure. It has been suggested that the genotoxic effects of fibrous particulates, such as asbestos, is due in part to the generation of reactive oxygen species (...

Health implications of natural fibrous zeolites for the Intermountain West.

Fibrous zeolites have recently been implicated in an endemic outbreak of malignant pleural mesothelioma in several villages in Cappadocia in central Turkey (Baris et al., 1979; Lilis, 1981). The possible association between fibrous zeolites and mesothelioma and the potential biological activity of fibrous erionite from the United States are under active investigation. The zeolite minerals compr...

Erionite-Na upon heating: dehydration dynamics and exchangeable cations mobility

Erionite is a fibrous zeolite significantly more tumorigenic than crocidolite asbestos upon inhalation. In recent years, several papers have been published aimed at characterizing from the crystal-chemical point of view erionite fibres. As their toxicity has been ascribed to Fe acquired within the human body, studies aimed at characterizing the iron topochemistry have also been published, sugge...

Case Report North American Erionite-Associated Mesothelioma with Pleural Plaques and Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Case Report

Erionite, a fibrous zeolite mineral, has been categorized as a class I carcinogenic agent for its causative role in mesothelioma. In select villages in Turkey, erionite is the cause of more than 50% of mesotheliomas. In contrast, in the United States mesotheliomas are frequently associated with asbestos exposure. We describe the first reported case of a patient with erionite-associated pleural ...
